Power Rangers Commission

I was approached by a client who wanted a YouTube thumbnail as a gift for someone who makes Power Rangers skits. Seems relatively easy, so I accepted without much thought. There were 12 characters that needed to be put on paper, so that was quite a bit of work, but the biggest issue I ran into here was probably the layout. I was testing out different things, but only one of them actually looked nice. After making the sketch I sat down and thought about how I'm going to incorporate all of these different colors together. I decided that the best course of action would be to make them all cool-toned and that helped quite a bit.

All of the characters within the thumbnail were drawn separately, full-body, in case the layout didn't look good in the end so I could change it. That also helped with customer satisfaction, because you could highlight or use any of the Rangers with their character voice-overs to point out who is talking in a fancier way. I didn't really have any overly-specific limits on what I could do in the illustration, but I did get a clear outline and concept that the client had in mind so I stuck to it while changing some details to make it pop more or make it more colorful overall.

The characters themselves are all on A3 300 DPI size papers, so you could easily print them on a T-shirt for merch or other future plans, which is similar to most of my art since I rarely go under those sizes unless specifically restricted to them. I also had to think about how to make the suits of the characters look less flat and plain, so I added some muscle toning to all of them because otherwise, the suits would've looked plasticky and cheap - though to be fair they do look cheap even in the original TV show. The extra details definitely added to the aesthetics and also made the artwork look more polished, rather than unfinished in the opposite case.

The next following problem I dealt with was the background since I didn't want it to look empty as it did in the reference image I was sent. I couldn't really decide on which one to go with, so I uploaded both. Both were in a galaxy setting as the reference, and the colors in the back also represented all of the ranger colors present. This is how the final looks.
